A Pre-Diploma Curriculum
Carlsbad International School students aged 14-16 participate in a unique curriculum specifically designed to prepare our students to be successful in their International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP).
Furthermore, as an international school welcoming students from all over the world, this programme is designed to engage a wide range of learners from diverse educational backgrounds. For non-native English speakers, the Pre-Diploma Years 1 and 2 are also designed to prepare their English language skills for the IB DP.
Integrated Classes & Academic Diversity
Pre-Diploma classes introduce our students to the six subject groups of the Diploma Programme.
English Language and Literature (Group 1)
The study of English Language and Literature helps students develop essential reading, analysis and writing skills that can enable them to succeed in all subjects and disciplines.
Students will read and write extensively in English, including diverse fiction and nonfiction options. They will develop skills in close reading and analysis, improve their oral and written expression, and learn to compose commentaries, argumentative essays and researched reports, in addition to discussions, presentations, and other creative work.
Language Acquisition (Group 2)
Carlsbad International School provides an immersion English-speaking environment that also embraces knowledge and fluency of other world languages.
For students still learning or refining their English, the study of English as an Additional Language (EAL) supports students in gaining fluency in this important international language. EAL courses, offered at three different levels, prepare students with the language and content knowledge needed prior to beginning the IB DP.
While English is our primary language of communication, we also promote our students’ ability to communicate in more than one language. Our modern foreign language programme teaches students how to become successful communicators in the language of their choosing. Current choices include German, Spanish and Czech.
Integrated Humanities (Group 3)
The study of humanities allows students to develop their skills of identification, evaluation, comparison and cross-disciplinary application through the study of human cultures across many subjects, including History, Geography, Business and Economics, Comparative Religion, Citizenship and Government.
Students in this integrated course learn how to analyze and evaluate human behavior in both theory and practice, developing a wide range of concepts and arguments relating to the nature and activities of individuals and societies.
Integrated Sciences (Group 4)
The study of science encourages students to engage in theoretical conversations, practical investigations and analysis of data to construct explanations, support arguments and make informed decisions. Pre-Diploma Science at CIS includes a range of essential subjects, including Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Earth and Space Science.
Through a combination of classroom instruction and laboratory investigation, students will learn to communicate scientific ideas in a variety of ways, design and carry out laboratory experiments, evaluate evidence, derive conclusions, construct explanations, and judge the arguments of others to make informed decisions in science and across disciplines.
Integrated Mathematics (Group 5)
The study of mathematics promotes the use of a powerful universal language, analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills that contribute to the development of logical and abstract thinking. Mathematics can help make sense of the world and allows phenomena to be described in precise terms. Pre-Diploma Mathematics at CIS aims to equip all students with the knowledge, understanding and intellectual capabilities required to progress successfully onto Mathematics Diploma Programme courses.
The topics covered in Pre-Diploma Mathematics will include Number Theory, Algebra, Functions, Geometry, Statistics and Probability.
Students will develop the skills of inquiry, application, analysis, the investigation of patterns and relationships, and the overall development of logical and abstract problem-solving techniques and critical thinking skills.
Visual Arts (Group 6)
The study of visual arts promotes greater cognitive development and fine motor skills across all disciplines. Students will engage in both theory and practice through a variety of subjects, including History of Art, Historical Figures, Art Criticism, and Practice Skills and Techniques. Pre-Diploma Visual Arts at CIS also provides students with the opportunity to develop a respect for the cultural and aesthetic differences in art, in addition to an understanding of the technical, creative and communicative aspects of art.
Students will develop the skills and concepts of composition, colour, light and shadow, and realistic versus expressive rendering. They will use creative thought and problem-solving skills through pattern recognition, representation, symbolism, allegory, observation and abstraction. Techniques include Drawing, Painting, Collage, Graphics, and Craft and Design, using paper, textile, wire and other natural materials.
All pre-diploma students also follow our technology programme, activities programme, and study skills class, called Approaches to Learning.
